ABSTRACT
Background: The rate of cesarean delivery in Indonesia reached 17.6% in 2018 which hinders the implementation of Early Breastfeeding Initiation (EIBF). EIBF plays an important role in the success of exclusive breastfeeding and neonate well-being. This study aims to analyze the factors of EIBF implementation in one of the secondary referral hospitals in Surabaya City.
Methods: Retrospective observational study using patient medical record data. The sample in this study was 248 women in labor who were taken by random sampling. The analysis used a univariate and bivariate approach with the chi-square test.
Result: The study found that unsuccessful EIBF was more common in mothers who had cesarean deliveries with the following characteristics: aged between 15 and 20 years (70%), elementary school education (85.4%), primipara (91.8%), and emergency cesarean section (97.1%). Education level, parity, and type of cesarean delivery were significantly associated with EIBF success.
Conclusion: Early detection and prevention of complications should be a priority especially for complications and medical indications of cesarean delivery, and there needs to be a hospital commitment to support IMD in cesarean delivery through hospital policies and regulations.
